What we know:

At around 8.50am today, emergency services were called to an address Rosslyn Avenue, Sunderland following a report of an explosion. Two houses have been affected by the incident.

Emergency services have confirmed there have been no fatalities. One woman was rescued and is in a “serious but stable” condition.

Police release official statement

In a statement earlier today Northumbria Police said:

At around 8.50am today, emergency services were called to an address Rosslyn Avenue, Sunderland following a report of an explosion. Two houses have been affected by the incident.

Northumbria officers along with North East Ambulance Service, Great North Air Ambulance and Tyne and Wear Fire Brigade attended the scene. There is currently a 30m cordon in place with the road closed and people are being asked to avoid the area. Residents of Rosslyn Avenue have been evacuated for their safety.

One woman has been taken to the RVI, her condition is described as serious but stable. All other residents affected are now safe and have been accounted for.

The former library on Black Road has been opened for evacuated residents.

Officers can confirm that this incident has no link to terrorism activity and an investigation into the circumstances of the explosion will begin in due course.
